Students obtain knowledge about the cell structure and properties in relation to their performance in the environment of biotechnological processes and about basic stoichiometric calculations and determination of kinetic parameters.
Prerequisites for registration:
none
Course contents:
1. Microbiology
cell structure, eukaryots, prokaryots
groups of microorganisms – bacteria, yeasts, mycellial fungi, algae, animal and plant cells
aerobes and anaerobes
cell nutrition, composition of cultivation media, life cycle
2. Biochemistry
basic biochemical compounds – lipids, saccharides, DNA and RNA, amino acids and proteins. Structure and function in living organisms.
3. Principle biotechnological production processes
Brief of overview of biotechnological production processes. Amino acids. Enzymes. Antibiotics. Ethanol. Organic acids. Polysaccharides. Vitamins. Specialty chemicals.
4. Metabolic stoichiometry and energetics
Principles of production and consumption of energy inside the cells (ADP and ATP), form of carbon catabolism, respiration chain, biosynthesis of small molecules and macromolecules, cell membrane transport and principle regulatory mechanisms. Application of this knowledge on the production processes of final metabolites
Stechiometry of cell growth and product formation, yield coefficients
Thermodynamics of cell cultivations
5. Laboratory exercises
