Learning outcomes of the course unit:
The student masters the basics of electrochemistry. He/she can characterize the electrolyte solutions and describe the proceeding processes and equilibria. He/she understands the operation of electrochemical cells, and the basic types of electrodes, used in the laboratory and technical applications. The student comprehends the basics of chemical kinetics, can formulate rate equations, and describe the kinetics of common reactions types. He/she can solve the simple reaction mechanisms. He/she uncovers the principles of catalysis including enzymatic catalysis. He/she will also achieve basic knowledge on additional areas in physical chemistry: colloid chemistry and physical chemistry of surfaces.
Course contents:

Electrochemistry: conductivity of the electrolyte solutions, thermodynamic properties of ions in solution, equilibrium electrochemistry, electrochemical cells, polarization of electrodes
Chemical kinetics: rate of chemical reaction, kinetics of elementary and complex reactions, factors influencing the rate of chemical reactions, catalysis
Colloid chemistry: colloidal state, types of colloidal systems, surface energy and wetting, capillarity, adsorption and adsorption isotherms
