Level of study:
2.
Prerequisites for registration:
none
Assesment methods:
Students write four written tests from problems for 60 points in total. To pass them, minimum 33 points are needed. A written exam from the theory is classified by 40 points. A minimum needed is 22 points. A student will receive credits if both parts are passed successfully.
Learning outcomes of the course unit:
A student has a knowledge of fundamentals of industrial distillation extraction and absorption processes and about the application of the knowledge from material and enthalpy balances, thermodynamics of multiphase systems and mass transfer theory for calculations of separation of simple mixtures.
Course contents:
Binary single- and multistage distillation -- characterization of equilibrium; calculation of batch and continuous distillation; steam distillation; Mc-Cabe-Thiele method of calculation of distillation column; design of dimensions of tray and packed bed columns; column efficiency; batch multistage distillation; extraction and azeotropic distillation. Extraction -- liquid-liquid and liquid-solid extraction; solution of batch and continuous extraction in triangular diagram. Absorption and desorption -- characterization of equilibrium and mass transfer; material balance of co-current and counter-current absorption; absorption with recirculation; calculation of dimensions of tray and packed-bed columns; height of equivalent to theoretical plate and to transfer unit.
